La La Labor

It has almost been a month since we had Maxine! Incredible. Here is our labor story....

Monday, June 21st

I had my Dr. appointment and he said that I was dilated 1-2. He scraped my membranes to hopefully speed the process along. It was very painful, but over quickly. He said he still thought I was 7-10 days away from labor.

Tuesday, June 22nd

I started bleeding lightly throughout the day. Late Tuesday night and into the early morning hours of Wednesday I had painful contractions. They lasted a minute or less but were coming every 5-10 minutes. I finally got to sleep around 6:30 am.

Wednesday, June 23rd

My contractions kept going although they weren't regular. They ranged from 12 minutes to an hour apart. I tried to sleep as much as possible, but it was hard because the contractions were still so painful.

Thursday, June 24th

Late Wednesday night and into the early morning of Thursday the contractions persisted, getting 6 - 8 minutes apart. We decided to go to the hospital around 4:30 because I could not handle more stupid contractions. We got there and I was only dilated to a 2+. So much for two days of contractions. They monitored me for a hour and I had no movement. I walked around for an hour, which wasn't walking the whole time because I was exhausted from no sleep. I didn't move any, so they sent me home, BUT, they gave me a beloved shot of morphine and some sleeping agent. We got home around 7 am. I slept till 2:30, ate something, fell back asleep at 4:00, slept till 8:30, ate something while falling asleep, then finally was awake. The contractions were going on throughout the day, but numbed enough so I could sleep. Then, around 10:00 pm, they started again, horrific. Lasting 100 seconds and immobilizing me, the contractions were terrible. At 3:30 am Seth convinced me to head back to the hospital. I was sure we would be sent home again, but decided to head back over.

Friday, June 25th

We got to the hospital and I was feeling kind of embarrassed to be back the next day, although the contractions were so terrible, I couldn't really focus on anything else. I got changed and ready to be checked again. The nurse checked me and said, "How does a 4 sound? You are staying." I had my epidural within the hour. Epidural = heaven. My blood pressure dropped drastically when I got the epidural to 65/37, normal is 120/80. I nearly passed out, but they gave me meds real quick to pull it back up.

They broke my water and gave me pitocin to speed the process up. I agreed to be part of a study where if she was face up I would pull out of a control group and a variable group. The control group meant the Dr. wouldn't turn the baby, and the variable group meant they would turn the baby. She was face up, so Seth picked out of an envelope and we got control group. So I pushed and pushed. I didn't think I could get her out. I started falling asleep in between contractions. I told the nurse, "I don't think I can push anymore." She left the room and a few seconds later we read on the monitor: "Patient is exhausted. Doesn't think she can push anymore." Seth thought it was funny she wrote that. When my WONDERFUL nurse came back she brought the Dr. and after a couple pushes with him he turned Maxine (although at that time she was nameless still). Once he turned her I pushed a couple more times and then they got the bed taken apart and the Dr. all dressed up. After pushing with the Dr. a couple more times he said, "If you feel you can't do it anymore I can use the forceps." After finding out they won't hurt the baby, I agreed and she was out in a few small pushes. So she came after 2 hours of pushing. She cried when she came out and they took her straight to little bed because she had meconium. After checking her out and seeing that she was fine, they gave her to Seth and then he brought her to me. It felt so normal to hold her, just wonderful. I just wanted to snuggle with her for hours.

So there it is, our labor story. Hopefully someone is interested! :) As I was writing this, Maxine was laying next to me, giggling in her sleep. Gosh, I love this little girl!
